Ginkgo Biloba is a traditional medicine that has been used for more than 5000 years in the treatment of respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis and asthma. It is extracted from the leaves of the Ginkgo Biloba tree, an ancient tree first found in China. Being a plant based medicine Ginkgo Biloba is, of course, a herbal health supplement and is most commonly bought as a leaf extract referred to as GBE. There is now emerging evidence that Ginkgo Biloba can also help in the treatment of memory loss and dementia.
Why you might consider taking GBE.
Given that GBE is a traditional health supplement treatment for pulmonary diseases and is under investigation as an aid to fighting dementia and memory loss – you might have already decided to start taking GBE. However, there are other reasons why you might consider taking a course of this health supplement for other reasons. The fact is that Ginkgo Biloba has the ability to increase the blood flow around your body by helping your blood vessels and arteries to maintain their elasticity it also has the effect of thinning your blood, which will also help your circulation by helping to prevent blood clots that could, ultimately, lead to a stroke. GBE is also an excellent anti-oxidant, meaning it will mop up all those harmful free-radicals in your system, leaving you feeling generally healthier. Whilst all of those things will help you to feel better if you have a respiratory illness, there’s’ good news too for dementia and memory loss sufferers. GBE is thought to increase the blood flow to the brain which means that the brain will, ultimately, receive more oxygen. As diseases like Alzheimer’s are linked to diminished blood supply to the brain – it is hoped that GBE may yet be of benefit to memory loss sufferers and others afflicted by things like headaches and migraines.
Taking Ginkgo Biloba.
As with all health supplements, you should discuss taking GBE with your physician first, especially if you’re already on some form of regular medication. Otherwise the normal dose of GBE to take is just 120mg a day. Rather than taking this in one go have two doses of 60mg GBE or three doses of 40mg GBE, spread throughout the day, perhaps at meal times? GBE won’t have an immediate effect on you and could take between six to 12 weeks before you start to feel the benefits of it.
