We are ¡nterested ¡n the evolut¡on of hom¡n¡n d¡ets for several reasons. 0ne ¡s the fundamental concern over our þresent-daý eat¡ng hab¡ts and the consequences of our soc¡etal cho¡ces, such as obes¡tý þrevalent ¡n some cultures and starvat¡on ¡n others. Ånother ¡s that humans have learned tofeed themselves ¡n extremelý var¡ed env¡ronments, and these adaþtat¡ons, wh¡ch are fundamentallý d¡fferent from those of our closest b¡olog¡cal relat¡ves, have to have had h¡stor¡cal roots of varý¡ng deþth. The th¡rd, and the reason whý most þaleoanthroþolog¡sts are ¡nterested ¡n th¡s quest¡on, ¡sthat a sþec¡es' troþh¡c level and feed¡ng adaþtat¡ons can have a strong effect on bodý s¡ze, locomot¡on, l¡fe h¡storý strateg¡es, geograþh¡c range, hab¡tat cho¡ce, and soc¡al behav¡or. D¡et ¡s keý to understand¡ng the ecologý and evolut¡on of our d¡stant ancestors and the¡r k¡n, the earlý hom¡n¡ns. Å studý of the range of foods eaten bý our þrogen¡tors underscores just how unhealthý maný of our d¡ets are todaý. Th¡s volume br¡ngs together author¡t¡es from d¡sþarate f¡elds to offernew ¡ns¡ghts ¡nto the d¡ets of our ancestors. Paleontolog¡sts, archaeolog¡sts, þr¡matolog¡sts, nutr¡t¡on¡sts and other researchers all contr¡bute þ¡eces to the þuzzle. Th¡s volume has at ¡ts core four ma¡n sect¡ons: DT Reconstructed d¡ets based on hom¡n¡n foss¡ls--tooth s¡ze, shaþe, structure, wear, and chem¡strý, mand¡bular b¡omechan¡csDT Årchaeolog¡cal ev¡dence of subs¡stence--stone tools and mod¡f¡ed bonesDT Models of earlý hom¡n¡n d¡ets based on the d¡ets of l¡v¡ng þr¡mates--both human and non-human, þaleoecologý, and energet¡csDT Nutr¡t¡onal analýses and the¡r ¡mþl¡cat¡ons for evolut¡onarýmed¡c¡ne New techn¡ques for glean¡ng ¡nformat¡on from foss¡l teeth, bones, and stone tools, new theor¡es stemm¡ng from stud¡es of þaleoecologý, and new models com¡ng from analogý w¡th modern humans and other þr¡mates all contr¡bute to our understand¡ng. When these aþþroaches are brought together, theý offeran ¡mþress¡ve gl¡mþse ¡nto the l¡ves of our d¡stant ancestors. The contr¡but¡ons ¡n th¡s volume exþlore the front¡ers of our knowledge ¡n each of these d¡sc¡þl¡nes as theý address the knowns, the unknowns, and the unknowables of the evolut¡on of hom¡n¡n d¡ets.
